Food Ordering App:
Aahar: Ghar jaisa swad (Tastes like home)

My Role :
Creating an app from concepts, research, design to final product delivery
Duration :
Sept 2022 - Nov 2022

Project Overview

As part of my Ux Design Professional Certificate, I was tasked with creating an app that gives back to the community in a meaningful way. My goal was to create an app that streamlines the application process so that users can order food quickly and efficiently.

The Problem

In today's hectic life, most of the target audiences need a food delivery app that allows them to order favourite dishes from particular nearby favourite restaurants with just a few taps since most of the restaurants don't have a dedicated app so the goal was to create an app for a local restaurant which have a user-friendly interface, to easily browse menus, place orders, and track deliveries in real-time. The app connects with their valuable customers and ensures accurate and timely delivery to their doorstep. The app must focus on busy working professionals, college-aged students and those who don't have reliable transportation but get connected to their favourite restaurant along with trusted drivers that ensures the items are picked up and delivered accurately and efficiently, straight to their doorstep.

The Goal

The goal was to create a time-saving, accessible, and simple-to-use/user-friendly food ordering app. To achieve this, I utilized rapid iteration techniques such as storyboarding and Crazy 8s, with minimal prior research on the topic. The primary goal was to prioritize simplicity and accessibility in the app's interface.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Designer & Researcher

  • Conducting user research and usability tests

  • Create low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes

  • Wireframes

  • Present user findings

Initial Questions

Once I had a basic idea of the requirements, I started with some initial questions

  1. What is the user's primary motivation for using the app?

  2. What are the user's expectations for the app based on similar apps they may have used in the past?

  3. Who are the target audiences?

Understanding the user

During the discovery phase of my project, I conducted remote user interviews with 6 individuals from various backgrounds to understand their experience with food delivery apps. I asked questions about their likes and dislikes, ease of use, and areas for improvement. I found that some users were satisfied with the quick and easy navigation, while others felt there could be improvements in providing clearer delivery times and reducing overwhelming information.

These are the questions I asked during my interviews to understand users' experiences with food delivery apps:

  1. Do you use food delivery apps?

  2. What do you like/dislike about using this?

  3. Is the app easy or difficult to use?

  4. What do you wish could be better about using food delivery apps?

  5. Is there any point in your ordering process that you feel like you get stuck?

User Pain Points

Financial

Some users would be frustrated when random fees appear when they place their order

Support

Users wished that there was an easy way to connect to a driver from an app if an issue arose or a way to contact a restaurant directly

Time

Ordering food through an app can be time consuming

Personas

My goal was to draw conclusions from the user interviews and develop a user persona to identify pain points associated with food delivery ordering and how I can brainstorm ideas for my designs

User Journey

I mapped out the users' steps to see how I could simplify their journey to help them reach their most important goals with the app. I wanted to see what Hriday's actions and feelings were in the user flow of ordering from a restaurant and having it delivered to him. I determined his steps by going through how a typical user would order food. Some of Hriday's feelings through each step of his process fluctuate. From happy and excited to frustrated to satisfied. Some opportunities for improvement were adding images, having a detailed list of food items, and having coupons/rewards.

Starting the design

User flow

I wanted to create a user flow diagram to illustrate the process that a user would follow to navigate from opening a food delivery app to confirming their order. This will help me better understand the user experience and identify areas for improvement.

Sketches

I sketched a storyboard to visualize the user journey on six screens, focusing on their needs and interactions. By creating a big-picture storyboard and close-up user journey, I was able to identify the best app features for a seamless user experience.

Digital Wireframes

I transitioned from paper wireframes to digital wireframes by using Figma. The goal here was to start building my screens on the computer.

Usability studies: Findings

I conducted a remote, moderated usability study with five participants to evaluate a lo-fi prototype of my food delivery app.

The plan for this research study includes seven stages:

  • Project Background

  • Research Goals

  • Research Questions

  • KPIs

  • Methodology

  • Participants

  • Script.

Redefining the Design

Mockups

With the initial usability issues fixed, I proceeded to create mockups and a high-fidelity prototype of the design.

High-fidelity Prototype

This is the high-fidelity prototype presented with a clear user flow from ordering food, placing an order, and waiting to be delivered. This meets users' needs by giving them visuals and cues to follow so they can easily navigate from screen to screen to get to their desired goal.

Accessibility Considerations

I ensured that my app is designed with accessibility in mind, by using easily identifiable icons that prompt users towards specific actions, and by using simple and concise language throughout the user flow to avoid confusion.

Icon

Use both icons and texts to let users find the functions they look for easily

Visual

Use consistent colours, sizes, fonts to let users can easily get familiar with the app

Images

Use images to help all users better understand the designs.

Takeaways

After my design process, I thought about what the impact of my food delivery app would/will have on my users. From the feedback I received, it's essential to create user-friendly apps, especially for the next billion users (NBU) so that people can

order items without too much hassle.

I learned that designing an app to meet users' needs is a long and sometimes tedious process, but keeping the same goal, being user-focused, helps me better understand users and their problems and help them with my design skills. This, made me become a better designer and problem-solver as I continue to learn new design trends by using various tools to help me in the process.

Thanks for scrolling till the end!

I understand it’s a long case study and I appreciate that you took some of your valuable time to go through it.
